Rhinoplasty, also referred to as nose surgery, is literally defined as shaping of the nose'. It is a plastic surgery procedure which can reshape the nose in several ways, including reducing or increasing the overall size, removing a hump, changing the angle between the nose and upper lip, narrowing the span of the nostrils, or changing the shape of the tip or the bridge of the nose. The goal of rhinoplasty is often to achieve better harmony between the nose and the other facial features and, often times, even the slightest alteration can greatly improve a patient's appearance. In addition, rhinoplasty can help to relieve some breathing problems.
Who are good candidates for rhinoplasty?
Anyone who is interested in improving the appearance of the nose and is physically healthy and realistic in their expectations may be a good rhinoplasty candidate. Some people undergo rhinoplasty simply because they are unhappy with the nose they were born with, while others do not like how their nose has changed with age or through injury. Other people seek out rhinoplasty to improve breathing problems.
Can rhinoplasty be performed at any age?
It's generally recommended that young patients reach their full growth before undergoing rhinoplasty, which usually occurs around the age of fifteen or sixteen, though there are some exceptions such as cases involving breathing problems or injury. Continued growth of the nose can alter the changes made through rhinoplasty and the patient may require a revision rhinoplasty procedure in the future.
What happens during a consultation for rhinoplasty?
During the consultation for rhinoplasty, the surgeon will perform an external and internal examination of the nose, take a thorough medical history, and discuss your goals. He or she will explain their expectations for surgery, the associated risks, the anesthesia, the surgical facility to be used, and the costs of the procedure. The surgeon may suggest additional surgery, such as chin augmentation, to help you better achieve your goals. Many surgeons use computer imaging to give patients a better idea of the end result and, provided that you decided to proceed with surgery, the surgeon may take photographs of your face and nose.
Where is the rhinoplasty procedure performed?
Rhinoplasty surgery is often performed in a surgeon's office-based surgical facility or an outpatient surgery center, though it can also take place in a hospital.
When performing rhinoplasty, what type of anesthesia is used?
Local anesthesia combined with sedation is often used during rhinoplasty surgery, though general anesthesia may be used as well.
How is the actual rhinoplasty procedure performed?
Anesthesia is administered and then incisions are made to access the underlying bone and cartilage support system. The new shape is achieved by removing, adding to or rearranging certain amounts of underlying bone and cartilage. Once the desired shape is achieved, the tissues are redraped over the new frame and the incisions are sutured closed.
How long does the actual rhinoplasty procedure last?
Surgical times for rhinoplasty will vary, though the procedure is typically completed in about one to two hours.
For rhinoplasty, where are the incisions made?
Most incisions for rhinoplasty are confined to the inside of the nose, which is referred to as closed rhinoplasty. In some cases, however, an additional small incision is made on the underside of the nose on the skin separating the nostrils, which is referred to as open rhinoplasty.
Are there scars?
For closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are confined to the inside of the nose, leaving no visible scarring. For open rhinoplasty, however, the small incision made on the underside of the nose on the skin separating the nostrils will results in a small, well-concealed scar that will fade over time.
Should I expect to experience much pain with my rhinoplasty procedure?
Pain medication may be required as the head and nose may ache a bit at first.
What is the recovery like after rhinoplasty?
After rhinoplasty, particularly the first day after surgery, the face will likely feel puffy. Bruising and minor swelling in the eye area may occur in the immediate days after surgery. Patients may experience some achiness of the nose along with a dull headache, though this can be controlled with prescription pain medication. The majority of visible swelling fades within two weeks, though less visible, subtle swelling can take as long as a year to fully fade. Nasal packing, if used, is typically removed the morning after surgery, while dressings and splints applied to the nose after surgery are typically removed within six or seven days. Though absorbable sutures are often used and dissolve on their own, any traditional sutures used are typically removed within one to two weeks. It's important to follow your surgeon's instructions after surgery and to immediately report anything unusual that may occur.
How soon after rhinoplasty surgery will I be able to return to work?
Patients are generally able to return to work in about one to two weeks after rhinoplasty surgery.
How soon after rhinoplasty surgery will I be able to exercise?
Some activities will be prohibited for several weeks after your procedure. Exercise can typically be resumed within two to three weeks after surgery, though sun exposure and risk of injury to the nose should be avoided for eight weeks.
How soon after rhinoplasty surgery are the stitches removed?
Though absorbable sutures which dissolve on their own are often used, any traditional sutures used are typically removed within one to two weeks after surgery.
What are the risks or complications that can occur with rhinoplasty?
As with all types of surgery, there are potential risks or complications associated with rhinoplasty surgery and these may include adverse anesthesia reactions, incomplete improvement, infection, small burst blood vessels, and the need for additional surgery.
Does insurance cover the cost of rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty procedure performed for purely cosmetic reasons are generally not covered by insurance. When rhinoplasty is performed to correct or improve nasal function or for a major deformity or injury, then the procedure may be covered by insurance to some degree. Patients should be sure to check with their own insurance carrier.
