Your face has a lot of muscles that help you express emotions and feelings. Of all these muscles, those around your eyes and forehead are particularly active. When you’re surprised, your eyes widen and your eyebrows are raised. When you’re concentrating or confused, your eyebrows knit together and your eyes narrow. These two areas work together to create many of your facial expressions.
However, as you get older, aging causes the muscles in your forehead to weaken and the skin to become loose or droopy. Wrinkles can appear in lines across your forehead or between your eyebrows. Your face looks older and tired. In severe cases, your vision could even be partially or fully blocked. Brow lift surgery with Dr. Andres Bustillo can improve your eyes and forehead by repairing damaged muscles, tightening your skin, and repositioning fat deposits.
What Happens during Brow Lift Surgery
The goal of the brow lift is to brighten your face by adjusting the position of your eyebrows and improving the overall look of your forehead. Aging can cause your eyebrows to droop forward, which can result in extra soft tissue around the eyes. Fat deposits can also move down from your forehead and cause your eyebrows to droop or bulge even more. This effect can result in impaired vision if the eyebrows droop low enough. A brow lift pulls the soft tissue back so the eyebrows are repositioned.
In the procedure, Dr. Bustillo uses incisions to access the inside of the forehead. If your muscles are weak or damaged, they can be repaired and tightened. Fat can be moved or taken out as needed to prevent extra bulges around your eyebrows or eyes. If your soft tissue is loose enough, extra tissue can be removed. The skin is then lifted back to the incisions and smoothed across your forehead. Sutures or tape are used to close the incisions, which are then bandaged. The whole procedure is performed under sedation and generally takes one to two hours.
Types of Brow Lift Surgery
Dr. Bustillo uses three different brow lift surgery techniques in his practice. These techniques dictate the position of the incisions and the appropriate one depends on the patient’s individual needs. The endoscopic brow lift involves making short incisions at multiple spots across the hairline. Dr. Bustillo then uses tools and a small camera device to fix the inside of your forehead and lift your eyebrows before closing the incisions. This brow lift is less invasive and is used on most patients.
The hairline brow lift, by contrast, involves making one long incision across the hairline. This allows Dr. Bustillo direct access to the muscles and soft tissue. It also works better on patients with a high hairline or a long forehead.
The coronal brow lift is used on patients with little or no hair or patients that have a very low hairline. Instead of making the incision across the forehead from ear to ear, Dr. Bustillo makes the incision within the scalp. This allows him to elevate the hairline if necessary and makes the incision easier to conceal.
Recovering From Brow Lift Surgery
It can take as long as a month for the forehead to heal, but most patients are able to resume normal activities after only a week. The forehead will be swollen and sore for the first few days and it is recommended that you keep your head elevated during this time. Ice packs or other cold compresses can also be used to keep the swelling under control. Most of the swelling will be gone after the first week. Dr. Bustillo typically removes your bandages the day after your surgery and any sutures are generally removed after five or six days. Once most of the swelling is gone, patients can resume light daily activities, but any strenuous physical activity should be postponed until the fourth week.
You’ll be able to see the results of your surgery as the swelling dissipates. You may even see a noticeable difference right after the procedure. Brow lift surgery can remove as much as ten years off your face by lifting your eyebrows and smoothing your forehead. These results may be enhanced even more with a facelift or eyelift surgery. In fact, it is common for brow lift patients to combine their procedure with another one to get maximum results.
