Dr. Bustillo focuses his medical practice on the face. Because of this, over half of his practice is dedicated to rhinoplasty (nose surgery) and revision rhinoplasty. After otoplasty (ear surgery), rhinoplasty is the second most common plastic surgery for those under 18 years of age.
Because of his extensive experience with rhinoplasty, he is often asked if a patient can be too young for nose surgery. The answer is of course, yes, a patient can be too young. But what’s the right age?
The Right Age
Generally it is recommended that the patient is about 15 years old. This is because nose surgery shouldn’t be considered until full nasal development has occurred. The only reason to have it done earlier is for a functional, and not a cosmetic reason, such as if a child is having breathing difficulties.
The age of full nasal development can vary based on the sex of the patient. Females usually reach full development about a year or two after their first menstrual cycle. Males full nasal development can vary dramatically, from 13 years old until 21 years old or more.
A Consultation Is Essential
Due to this variation in development an initial consultation with a board certified doctor is essential to assess the patient physically. During this appointment the doctor will also assess the patient’s emotional maturity and see if their projected outcome is realistic.
Dr. Andres Bustillo, M.D., F.A.C.S. is one of a select few double board certified facial plastic surgeons. He is board certified by both the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) and the American Board of Otolaryngology — Head & Neck Surgery.
