Why does the tip of the nose droop after rhinoplasty?

Blog » Why does the tip of the nose droop after rhinoplasty?

09/27/2008 by Andres Bustillo, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Some patients have weak nasal tips. This must be assessed before the rhinoplasty, so that the necessary measures are taken to support the tip during surgery.

In cases where I feel that the tip of the nose is weak, I place a small piece of cartilage the columella at the base of the nose. This is called a “columellar strut” and its purpose is to help support the nasal tip so that it does not droop. Other techniques that I use to help maintain support of the tip include; preserving as much cartilage as possible in the tip cartilages, as well as the use of tip grafts to help support the tip.
